From Wikipedia: Classes are usually separated by a 10-minute break in between, while lunch break is 35 minutes. 10 minutes of homeroom begins and ends each day. Homeroom usually consists of general topics like discussion of events, general admin duties and cleaning duties.

Generally, one student is in charge of miscellaneous duties, and the person on duty changes everyday. Duties include the updating of the blackboard and collecting of notes.

Note: In Japan, included in the curriculum is Citizenship Studies, where students learn about topics regarding citizenship and responsibilities, civics and morals, and national pride, to name a few. For generalisation, I simply translated the topic as 'Civics'.
